Mastering the Art of Flying Economy
Making Flying in Economy More Bearable: Tips, Tricks, and Carry-On Essential
Flying economy can be a challenging and uncomfortable experience, especially on long overnight flights. But with a few tips, tricks, and a well-packed carry-on bag, you can make your journey more enjoyable.
Choose the Right Seat: There are 2 types of people in the world when it comes to optimal seat choice… You either want the window for the nice view and being able to lean against the wall or you want the aisle seat for easy access to the restroom and to stretch your legs. I’m an aisle seat traveler all the way because as you’ll read below, hydration is key on flights and that usually means a few trips to the restroom and having to ask a sleeping neighbor to move repeatedly provides a level of anxiety I try to avoid. While some budget airlines charge for selecting your seat this is one “extra” I always opt into.
Dress Comfortably: You can be fashionable and comfortable! Opt for breathable clothing, a good matching set is always a solid choice, and don’t forget a shall or oversized scarf for those chilly flights. Additionally, pack a pair of cozy socks or better yet compression socks to help with circulation and keep your feet warm. A pair of slides or sandals are another must, have you ever noticed the floor in the bathroom? They are wet and dirty so please don’t kick off your shoes and use the bathroom in just your socks- yuck!
Stay Hydrated: It’s crucial to drink plenty of water throughout the journey. Bring a refillable water bottle and hydration packs. You can ask the flight attendants to fill up your water bottle, usually, they have no problem doing that. Hydrating before the flight is important but let’s not forget that if you’re one to choose that window seat you need to wear sunscreen. The sun at that altitude is stronger than we’re used to and the best skin care in your 30’s is sunscreen in your 20’s.
Bring Entertainment: Load up your tablet or e-reader with books, movies, or TV shows to enjoy during the flight. Noise-canceling headphones can help create a more immersive and peaceful experience but the number one item I never travel without are earplugs. Don’t underestimate the power of quiet on a flight.
Stretch and Move Around: Sitting for extended periods can lead to stiffness and discomfort. Take short walks up and down the aisle whenever possible or perform simple stretches in your seat to promote blood circulation and relieve muscle tension. Don’t be timid about getting up and moving around if you need to. On long-haul flights there is usually a space near the bathrooms or off to the side where you can take a few minutes to stretch so don’t be bashful, get up if you need to but be mindful of those around you.
Snacks: While airlines often provide meals and snacks, having your own snacks can be a lifesaver, especially if you have dietary restrictions or preferences. Pack some healthy, non-perishable snacks like nuts, granola bars, or dried fruits to keep hunger at bay. Most in-flight meals have a lot of sodium and can add to aches and puffiness on a long flight.
Essential Carry-On Items:
Travel-sized toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste (do not use the bathroom sink water if you decide to brush your teeth. Bring a water bottle in with you), face wipes/washcloth, and a small moisturizer to freshen up during the flight.
Travel pillow/neck pillow.
Eye mask and earplugs: Help block out light and noise for better sleep.
Chargers and adapters: Keep your electronic devices powered up. Most flights have plugs but they don't always work so power up before you go! I keep a bag for all my electronics and a separate one for my toiletries to keep things organized.
Travel-sized medications: Bring any necessary prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies for headaches or motion sickness.
Spare set of clothes: In case of spills or unexpected delays. You’d be surprised how nice a clean pair of clothes feels after a long flight.
Face mask: While almost all airlines don’t require these anymore, I still travel with one. We’ve all been there, peacefully watching your favorite show or reading a book snacking your snacks and you smell it… Whether it’s a bottom burp or body odor a face mask can be a lifesaver. Extra tip, put a drop of lavender essential oil in the mask to block out the stinks.
Disinfectant/wet wipes are a MUST. I will always be that person who wipes everything down as soon as I sit. Nothing is sanitized anymore and people are gross so clean those tray tables, armrests, and seat belt buckles… oh and don’t forget the headrest.
While flying in economy class may not provide the same level of luxury as premium cabins, you can still make your journey more bearable by being prepared with the essentials above. Not everyone can afford those fancy lay-down seats but that shouldn’t stop you from traveling! A few hours of discomfort are always worth the amazing adventures. Happy travels!
